Hello Everyone, and Happy New Year.
With this announcement, we’re very close to rolling this out. We’ve linked up the above partners with Amazon, and are basically going through final certification with them to provide you, the end-users, with this feature via upcoming over-the-air software updates.
If you don’t see your brand of choice up there, that doesn’t mean they won’t be getting this update, just that we’re still working on the finer details with them to get them integrated with these new features. If possible, it’s our intention to bring this feature to our entire partner family and their customers.
In either case, our intention is to deploy this functionality ASAP as our partners get certified. Stay tuned for updates as all of us work to bring this feature to you, and as always feel free to ask questions, and I’ll try to respond as openly as I can.

I invested a bit of $$ into Play-Fi speakers just last summer…I’m more interested in compatibility without having to sink more money into brand new speakers when I just did. Any updates on the firmware updates for DTS player apps?

Hey,
Our plan is to update as many existing Play-Fi products as possible. We should be able to update the full catalog of the partners listed above: Klipsch Stream, McIntosh Laboratories, MartinLogan, and THIEL Audio. There’s also a few other partners we can update the existing products for as well, but we just need to finalize things with them. We should have announcements soon for that.

This a thousand times over. I bought-in to the DTS Play-Fi stuff with Polk Audio on the basis that they were getting an upgrade to be controlled by Alexa. I understand they don’t have microphones (which is what I think they’re wanting) but if they could at least be controlled by another Alexa device, this would be perfect…

Will this eventually include AV receivers that support Play-fi. For example, I have an Integra DRX-7 and an Echo Dot. Will I eventually be able to start a music stream from the Echo to play through the DRX-7?

There seems to be conflicting/unclear information posted in various places on the dts website. Currently, Will an echo dot control play-fi speakers? I have 6 Polk Omni speakers which I currently control in various configurations through the iPhone app. If I buy an echo dot, can I use that to play/control the speakers. Will it have the same/similar functionality in terms of music services, control of volume, speaker combinations etc

I got an email from Polk today teasing what appeared to be an alexa speaker. They are announcing it at CES tomorrow. If out is a play-fi alexa speaker like those above, I think it ups the odds of the other omni devices getting alexa integration. Who knows when though.

Hey Mr Valencia,
I’m sorry, I can confirm that those particular products won’t be receiving the update. At this point it’s not a disagreement between any of the partners, but instead a bit of a technical limitation with those models. Plainly, they just don’t quite have enough memory to house the extra Amazon Alexa services.
Polk does have a few other products in their catalog that can support this feature from a technical perspective, and hopefully we will announce those soon.

How about an update on Definitive Technology playfi products? We have invested a large amount of money on them (two soundbars and 4 W9s). We anticipated Amazon Alexa integration when we purchased. Thanks for any update.
Reply to this comment or Quote and reply
DTS Play-Fi 01-12-18
Hey Rick,
Unfortunately the W9s are not capable of receiving this update due to the same memory limitation mentioned above, however some of the DefTech sound bars are capable of and likely to be receiving this update, specifically: the W Studio Micro.

Jared Foster 01-12-18
Justin, how does the API work. If we have an echo and a single device that supports the API, can that device then be the primary to play to other unsupported speakers?
Example - I have 2 S2Rs and a W Studio Micro. If I have the W studio micro in a group with the S2Rs, can the micro be the primary to initiate the stream via Alexa, and stream to the s2rs as well?
What about if I had a PS10? Could I tell that to stream to a group that includes speakers that dont support the API? Buying one more speaker to get the functionality is better than replacing a bunch (and I probably need another Echo device in the near future anyway).
Reply to this comment or Quote and reply
DTS Play-Fi 01-15-18
Hey Jared,
Both in the case of the W Studio Micro and the PS10, if you start the stream on those supported products and then group to any other Play-Fi products (even those that won’t receive this update), Play-Fi will sync and stream the audio to all products from the Alexa Voice Services stream.
So basically, you can still link up speakers using Play-Fi, even if the stream is started from Alexa (either directly or via an Echo), it’s just that the handful of products that don’t receive the above update won’t be able to have streams started on them independently via voice control of an Echo/Dot.
Reply to this comment or Quote and reply
Jared Foster 01-15-18
Thanks Justin, that sounds like great news. Just a clarification question, would we have to start the stream to the W studio Micro, then manually add speakers to the stream in the app, or can we have the Micro W and Polk speakers, in the same group, and tell the Echo/Dot, “Play Song on playfi group all speakers” and it would just stream to all speakers with the Micro W as the primary?
If they have to be manually added, once thats done, can we issue the Echo/Dot additional commands like volume or changing track/source and have the whole group respond?
As always, I appreciate you actually responding to folks asking questions about this. Obviously there is a lot of interest in the API!

2 questions (I posted a question in the other Alexa thread, but I guess no one’s monitoring that one anymore)
1. So are you saying that we can connect an echo dot to our devices (I’ve got 4 W7s) and have Alexa functionality to play to the device via the Dot?
2. Is there / are there any plans to enable queueing via media server playback I can queue when playing music locally on my phone, but I mainly listen to music stored on a network server.
Thank you.

This is unfortunate to hear. Over the last year I’ve pieced together a collection of 10 Definitive play-fi products including W7s, W9s, W Adapts, and a W amp. I chose to keep building upon this collection vs switching to sonos because the information disseminated by DTS was that older play-fi products would be updated to work with Alexa. Home automation integration is extremely important to me. I can appreciate the SQ of these speakers over Sonos and with the prospect of moving closer to integration with other home automation products, I’ve been putting up with all too often connection issues, but if play-if can’t deliver on adding integration to its early supporters then I’m going to have to consider throwing in the towel.

Hey all,
is there some page/info about the future/tentative roadmap of features of the Play-Fi ecosystem? I’d be good to decide how much to invest on this. I already have a 3 Play-Fi enabled speakers and they work great, but I miss the following features (which would be good to know when will be availble… or if they are in plan or if they are technically impossible):
- Speakers joined as ‘stereo’ can not play sound in ‘video-mode’
- Video-mode only supports broadcasting to a single speaker
- Support for a podcast app (e.g. Podcast Addict) where you can set up your own podcast sources. Some of the current applications supported offer popular podcast but you can not setup podcast from your own sources. (e.g. I’d like to add podcast from a particular country).
- Support/Add-On for browser app (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc. ) so that I can broadcast the sound of a particular webpage
- Broadcast anything (all sound) from your Android/iOS phone to Play-Fi speakers to avoid the need to have ‘supported’ apps only.
- NetworkTunning/ConnectivityControl:
- Enable an ‘advanced interface’ in the app to control the sound delay
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to control de quality of the sound broadcasted
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to control the bandwidth usage
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to prioritize the speakers (give them some sort of importance)
Finally, I’d be good to see more regular ‘NEWS’ posts related to the developments of features. What is coming and on which release.
Thanks for building a great eco-system. Hopefully, we end up having a true vendor-agnostic wifi-sound-broadcast system to avoid user lock ins.

Hey Josep,
Thanks for writing in. We don’t have a roadmap page or anything setup like that at the moment. We try not to make too many announcements for features, especially as the roadmap and this market change, because this can fiddle with timing, availability, etc., and things like that can lead to broken hearts.
This doesn’t mean that we don’t try to be as honest and open as possible. I’ll always try to answer any questions that come our way in as forthright a manner as possible.
For your first 2 questions:
- Speakers joined as ‘stereo’ can not play sound in ‘video-mode’
- Video-mode only supports broadcasting to a single speaker
We recently just added a mode in the Android and iOS app that extended the Line-In functionality, and adds a mode for audio for Video, similar to the PC app, which I believe is what you’re describing. This mode for “TV Audio” as we describe in the app actually sends audio very quickly, just like we do in the PC app, but you can actually connect up to 4 products for streaming. We could extend this same type of functionality to the PC application in a future update, but that would most likely be sometime later in the year, provided there’s enough interest from the Play-Fi community.
For these:
- Support for a podcast app (e.g. Podcast Addict) where you can set up your own podcast sources. Some of the current applications supported offer popular podcast but you can not setup podcast from your own sources. (e.g. I’d like to add podcast from a particular country).
- Broadcast anything (all sound) from your Android/iOS phone to Play-Fi speakers to avoid the need to have ‘supported’ apps only.
We make available to partners and integrators our Play-Fi SDK, so in this way app developers can put it in their apps, or phone/tablet manufacturers can put it in the OS. Some groups have already done this in the past, such as HP and Acer, and there are a few more who may announce something soon. If there’s an app you like in particular, I usually recommend reaching out to the developer and expressing to them your interest in our platform.
I assume these are all in regards to the PC app:
- NetworkTunning/ConnectivityControl:
- Enable an ‘advanced interface’ in the app to control the sound delay
Maybe. If there’s enough interest. We try to make things easy for the most part, and our concern is that this may make it more overly comliated
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to control de quality of the sound broadcasted
On Android and iOS, the quality is pretty much always what the file is. Windows is different because we take from the default Windows stream, and we do want to implement something to change the quality for users who are interested in Hi Res.
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to control the bandwidth usage
The bandwidth is tied somewhat strictly to the audio quality
- Enable an ‘advance interface’ to prioritize the speakers (give them some sort of importance)
Do you mean in so far as QoS? We do some of this in the background, and if you enable your PC’s network adapter to work with QoS WMM, it should help our playback.
Thanks again for writing in. We’ll try to keep information flowing as much as possible. We’re a somewhat smaller team than other groups, being on the integration side, more than the full product side, but we still try to provide as much information where possible. Hope this was at least a little helpful.

Thanks a lot for the fast and detailed answer! I appreciate it a lot, seriously.
I noticed that I asked too much in my previous note, and probably many requests were not that important
. If I have to prioritize, I’d focus on these ones first:
1) from the windows PC app: be able to broadcast sound in ‘video mode’ (i.e. synchronized with the image) to multiple Play-Fi devices (at least 2 to be able to have stereo support)
2) from android app: be able to broadcast all sound (from any app) to Play-Fi devices in order to avoid the need for third-party integration with your SDK (like it is done in windows PC app) . This will be very compelling for the ecosystem, since any application will work!
This is my humble feedback to your team. Keep up the good work!
Looking forward for updates soon!
Thanks again,

*STRONG* second to the control of the sound delay. I cannot use my Hi-Fi system (Onkyo) with any of my portable speakers (Wren/Polk/Paradigm/etc) because the audio processing on the Hi-Fi creates a sound delay which is nearly a full second behind the other speakers in sync. Very disappointing to be forced to exclude my best speakers out of the whole home audio experience… Been asking for this for some, it would be wonderfful to finally erase my buyers remorse when my Sonos friends come over and laugh at my setup.
Please Obi Wan, you’re our only hope.

DTS Play-Fi 01-31-18
Hey Tony,
Sorry if I missed that. That thread was getting pretty long.
1. Yes, after the update, basically the Play-Fi products would be seen as “Smart Home Devices” by Alexa after you link them to your account, and if you make a vocal require on the Dot to play to one of those activated Play-Fi products, the stream would launch on that product. That stream can then also be seen in the Play-Fi app, and you can link other speakers to that using the normal Play-Fi controls in the app, and any voice commands you issues will be reflected on the whole group. It’s important to note that in the case of the W7s, the update that brings this functionality will not be coming to those particular products.
2. Yes. Right now the Queue is built to certain services or courses that may support it, such as local media, Tidal, Napster, and a few others. But we want to make more of a “Global Queue”, that can just work from a top level of playback, so that you can add from any service in an active session, including DLNA Media Servers. I don’t have any specifics for you, but we’ll probably see this popping up a little later this year.

Ok, so I bought 4 dots (on sale right now) and connected to 4 of my DT speakers. I’m able to use Alexa to control audio but it’s just not as flexible as DTS PlayFi to the speakers:
1. You have to manually change the speakers to line in or DTS PlayFI. No way to do so with either app.
2. Amazon’s app doesn’t allow on the fly adding of speakers. You have to set up a group and either play a song individually or to the entire group. With DTS app, i can add/remove regardless of playback status.
It would be nice if the Amazon Alexa would just recognize the individual speakers.

First, it seems that some kind of forum will be very useful to the PlayFi Users community. We are just trying to get some type of customer advice/support from comments in some PR posts. Please, consider adding a forum.
My question: I do have 3 PlayFi speakers. When I try to broadcast to all of them, the first two connected sound fine, but the third plays the music but it breaks continuously (it does not disconnect, it just have some breaks… like FM radio interferences…). PlayFi protocol supports many more devices on the same stream… so I’m wondering what is the problem. It looks like some network bandwidth problem… so, is the wifi router the culprit? I’m trying to understand the issue before trying to upgrade my router…

I second this… a forum is needed. There are too many products and discrepancies in capabilities for products that users are probably the only ones that will be able to keep things straight.
John I had a polk speaker that had the same issues, I exchanged it for a new one (same model) and it resolved the issue. It it one piece of hardware that always has the issue, or is it just whatever speaker you connect 3rd?

Hey Jared,
That was the plan, but we have a few more things to finish up with Amazon before all the lights are green. They’ve told us it will be a little while longer for one of the last approvals we need (a lot of moving parts for this thing as it turns out).
I hate giving nebulous time frames, especially after having done so already so many times, but I think it will be at least another month.
Sorry for the bad news, and you’re right in that an official forum would actually be a better way to communicate feature progress and things like that for our end-users, as well as foster general community. Hopefully we can have something like that in the not-too-distant future.

Reply to this comment or Quote and reply
DTS Play-Fi 04-26-18
Yup. We’re going to begin the preliminary roll-out of this feature over the next few days. We’ll start with compatibility of a few partners and products, and also with support of the core services the platform offers. Over the next few months we’ll be adding more partners and services as we lead into a wider release. I wouldn’t call it a “Beta”, because it’s more robust than that, but it will be a sort of initial first release to get the ball rolling and get feedback from users.
I’ll be updating the Knowledge Base with a new section on “Works with Alexa”, which should be able to answer all the questions on what’s currently supported, and it will also give everyone a place to look for our progress on this feature as we roll it out to the larger family of DTS Play-Fi supported products and continue improving it.

Def Tech won’t be in the first wave, unfortunately, just a couple of partners and products to start as we individually certify units with Amazon for our partners. Over the next few months our plan is to certify pretty much all that can be or want to be.
I’ve updated the “Alexa” section of our Knowledge Base with further details on the program in some of the existing articles we have there, and there is one new one that describes the types of voice commands you can use with this. The main “In what ways does Play-Fi support Alexa?“article should be pretty comprehensive now in terms of product details and functionality. Hopefully it’s helpful for everyone. We’ll of course continue updating this as we move through the roll-out and as we get feedback from you guys.
I also reference a software version in the articles now, so keep an eye out for that version number (or higher) in your respective app stores. The various branded apps will begin updating possibly as soon as today, depending on the various store publishing processes, etc.

We like Google a lot as well, and wouldn’t have a problem with integrating it down the road. We’d be happy to, really. We’re open to all voice and control platforms and just want to make it easy for premium audio and entertainment brands like ours to integrate and become a part of a smart ecosystem.
With that in mind, Amazon has been a great partner, and they’ve been very open with working with us, providing us all the tools necessary to build out this integration. Even though we’re likely the first licensed platform to do this integration so as to license to others, Amazon has supported us in full the whole way, developing what needed to be done in order for this to see reality, and supporting the continual deployment thereof as we roll this out to more of our licensed partners.
It’s always good to work with a group that really wants to see great products out there and enable new experiences, premium or otherwise. I’d hope that all our partnerships work that way.

There are a few products in there that I believe some folks will be happy to see, but I don’t have any update on the Paradigm products at this time.
